Over a six week period the pupils from 3rd and 4th have learned a total of 15 playground games which can be enjoyed by children of all ages without the requirement of any equipment. The pupils then shared the games with the Junior and Senior Infants, teaching the games and playing the games with the children.
The Infants pupils have been observed playing these games at play time in the yard. It is wonderful to see the pupils occupied and involved in physical activity during play time, and the initiative has provided the children with a resource bank of games which they can enjoy at school, at home or anywhere they find themselves in the company of other children.
The 3rd and 4th class pupils equally enjoyed the games, and also worked on their language and teaching skills – explaining, clarifying, describing, encouraging, reminding and cautioning with regard to safety issues. It has been a very enjoyable experience for all involved, and the collaboration between the younger and older pupils was wonderful.
