Parish Mission

As you are aware, the Parish Mission has been taking place in the parish since last week. As part of this event the Mission Team will be in Scoil Mhuire every day this week. Every morning the team will facilitate ‘Prayers for Parents/Guardians’ in the school hall from 9:25 to 9:35. Anyone who is available is most welcome at this time. You can enter the hall from the side entrance of the school (Knockavilla side) once all the pupils have entered the school.

The children and staff will be involved in other sessions with the Mission Team throughout each day. The team will prepare the pupils in each class for a special service which will take place in the parish church on Thursday, 26th October, at 7.30pm. They hope you will attend this event to see the activities your child/children have been involved in during Mission week at school.

Maths Week at Scoil Mhuire

We are currently celebrating Maths Week at Scoil Mhuire, and pupils from 4th – 6th class have been working on a selection of maths challenges. Below is one which they had alot of fun with last Friday, and we invite you to try it at home. The pupils from 4th – 6th can share the solution and answer with their families, and we will post both here on Friday, 27th October.

There are 7 girls on a bus.
Each girl has 7 backpacks.
In every backpack, there are 7 big cats.
For every big cat, there are 7 little cats.
How many legs?

Solution
Answer = 10,990

*7 girls = 14 legs

7 x 7 = 49 backpacks
49 x 7 = 343 big cats
*343 x 4 = 1372 big cats legs

343 x 7 = 2401 little cats
*2401 x 4 = 9604 little cats legs

*14 + 1372 + 9604 = 10,990 legs

Think Before You Drink campaign – 4th & 5th class

Following on from Healthy Eating week at school, the pupils in Mrs Tierney’s class designed posters reflecting the theme of this years’ campaign – making a healthy drinks choice. The children were surprised at the amount of sugar contained in drinks which they would previously have considered to be a healthy choice and this is reflected in the small sample of our posters below.

Ruby Murphy, 4th class

Becky Farrell, 4th class

Abbie Shanahan, 4th class

Lucy Kate Abbott, 5th class

Amy Quinn, 5th class

National Children’s Day of Prayer

We celebrated National Children’s Day of Prayer on Friday, 13th October. We had mass for all the pupils and staff in the school hall. Fr Egan led the children in prayer and song at this very special event to mark the occasion, and also to celebrate the start of another school year. The theme of this years National Children’s Day of Prayer was The Family. Each child in the school was invited to draw a picture of his/her family and these were on display in the hall for the mass.

September in Room 2

Welcome back everyone agus fáilte romhaibh go léir ar ais ar scoil – new class groups and new teachers for many. September has whizzed by with lots of laughter and learning. We’ve enjoyed singing our phonic letter songs and dusting the cobwebs off to practice our writing and sums in lots of fun ways.

We have been busy with bean bags and hula hoops in the Halla and we’ve celebrated our families with pictures, stories and poems.

Safety on the farm was explained with special attention to the dangers of machinery and farm animals. Bhí a lán spórt is spraoi againn le dánta is rannta bríomhar. Our colourful ‘Together Again’ tree reminds us that we all play a part in the creation of a happy, safe and productive learning environment.

Lots of useful ideas about healthy lunches have been discussed with the pupils and sent home in an information leaflet, and the focus of this year’s Healthy Eating Awareness Week was the amount of hidden sugars in common drinks.

We’re already looking forward to autumnal antics and frightening facts with Hallow’een around the corner.

Autumn fun in the Infant room

We learned all about Autumn in Juniors and Seniors. We know a poem about Hilly Billy Hedgehog. We noticed the leaves changing colours so we used them to make some hedgehogs. We made more hedgehogs using clay. We needed to use our strong fingers to mould it and then we stuck on some spikes! We also painted Autumn Trees.

Healthy Eating week

This year the theme of our Healthy Eating week was “Think Before You Drink” and focused on the sugar content in various common children’s drinks. There were certainly a few eye openers here. We all agreed that water was definitely the best option. Many thanks to Mrs Flynn and her team for putting together a very informative display and resource pack.
